Overview
A custom 316l stainless steel food screen is manufactured by photochemical machining, a burr-free route that images a perforation array onto dry-film resist laminated to 316L sheet and dissolves the exposed metal in a chemistry tuned to austenitic stainless steel. Hole diameter, pitch, open area and web width are governed by the artwork and etch dwell rather than punch pressure, so the hygienic screen leaves the line flat with smooth, crevice-free hole walls that resist product build-up and clean down easily. Grade 316L (1.4404 / SUS316L, low carbon with ~2% Mo) is supplied in 0.1–0.6 mm gauges, and round, slot or radial arrays are cut from the same digital master.
For food, beverage and pharmaceutical buyers, a custom 316l stainless steel food screen addresses three recurring problems. Thin stainless foil curls, tears and work-hardens when blanked with fine holes; hygienic duty demands open area with holes down to 0.15 mm plus a smooth electropolished surface that will not trap residue or bacteria; and 316L must keep its chloride and pitting resistance without heat tint or embedded iron from laser or punching. Chemical machining forms every hole at one time, holding open area and wall quality consistent from first article through volume, while the passive film is preserved. New patterns need only a new film, which suits CIP-cleanable, multi-spec production lines.

Manufacturing Process / Workflow (8 Steps)
- Artwork & Nesting — Vectorize the hole array, verify hole-to-thickness ratio, and plan panel layout with tie bars and registration marks.
- Material Certification & Prep — Confirm 316L grade, mill certificate and thickness, inspect for scratches and flatness, then shear to exposure size.
- Cleaning & Lamination — Degrease and laminate dry-film resist under matched heat and pressure so no bubbles sit under fine webs.
- UV Exposure — Expose through high-resolution film with the array registered to the sheet edge for panel-level consistency.
- Development — Wash out unexposed resist to open the hole areas and inspect for residue that would block etching.
- Controlled Etching — Spray stainless-matched chemistry, tuning time, temperature and conveyor speed to hold sidewalls and avoid web thinning.
- Stripping & Passivation — Remove resist, neutralize, then electropolish and passivate to strip free iron and restore the passive film.
- Inspection & Packaging — Measure hole size, open area and surface roughness on a vision system, verify flatness, then pack in clean trays.
Core Advantages
- Burr-free hygienic surface: Chemical removal leaves no rolled edge, burr or crevice, so residue and bacteria have nowhere to lodge between CIP cycles.
- No die cost: Each new screen pattern is a new film, keeping prototypes and frequent revisions economical without a stamping tool.
- Chloride-resistant 316L: Molybdenum-bearing low-carbon steel resists pitting from salts, acids and cleaning agents in food duty.
- Repeatable fine holes: 0.10 mm holes and 0.12 mm webs form together across a panel with tight aperture spread and uniform open area.
- Stress-free flatness: With no shear or heat input, thin sheet stays flat, so screens seal correctly in filter housings.
- Fast hygienic tuning: With a custom 316l stainless steel food screen, hole size, open area and surface finish can be tuned item by item to a target flow and cleanability.
Typical Applications
- Dairy and milk filtration: Hygienic screens for milk, whey and cream lines that tolerate repeated CIP cleaning.
- Brewing and beverage: Mash, wort and juice filter plates with smooth, easy-rinse apertures.
- Edible-oil and syrup strainers: Perforated strainers that resist blinding and clean down fully.
- Pharmaceutical and fine chemical: Grade-compliant filter screens for ingredient and solution processing.
- Water and process utilities: Pre-filters and guard screens for wash-down and utility water.
- Food grading and sizing: Perforated plates for classifying grain, sugar and powdered ingredients.
Design Notes & Process Considerations
- Hole-to-thickness ratio: Keep hole diameter at or above material thickness; too small a hole distorts from undercut and traps residue.
- Open-area callout: State hole diameter, pitch and open-area percentage, and define round, slot or radial arrays rather than only a mesh count.
- Grade and finish: Specify 316L over 304 for chloride exposure, note low-carbon requirement, and set an Ra target and certificate needs.
- Nesting and tie bars: Leave enough tie bars and process borders, and specify the final cut method so thin webs survive stripping and cleaning.
- Thin-foil handling: For foil below 0.2 mm, specify a carrier or liner and call out flatness and cleanliness to avoid creases and fingerprints.
- Surface and cleanliness: With a custom 316l stainless steel food screen, define electropolish, passivation and residual-ion limits for hygienic duty.
