Stiffener Etching for FPC Reinforcing Plates

Overview

Stiffener etching is the photochemical way to make FPC reinforcing plates, where a thin metal or laminate blank is cut to an exact outline with locating holes, half-etched steps and connector windows dissolved in a single pass instead of being punched by a die. A photoresist mask is laminated, exposed and developed, and a matched etchant removes the unprotected material, so the stiffener leaves the line flat, burr-free and free of the rolled edge that would lift a bonded flexible circuit. Stock is typically 304/316L stainless, C1100 copper, Alloy 42, aluminum and polyimide- or epoxy-backed laminates, from 0.05 mm to 0.50 mm thick.

Because stiffener etching is driven by artwork, thickness, outline and bonding features are tuned together: the plate must be stiff enough to support a connector or component zone yet thin enough to stay clear of the FPC bending area. Outline holds ±0.01 mm, locating-hole position ±0.02 mm and flatness is controlled so the adhesive bonds evenly, with half-etched steps down to 0.03 mm where a stepped profile is needed. PSA backing, polyimide lamination, nickel plating, clean deburring and carrier- or tray packing follow on the same line.

Parameter Window

  • Available Materials: 304/316L stainless, C1100 copper, Alloy 42, aluminum, polyimide (PI) / FR-4-backed laminate
  • Material Thickness Range: 0.05–0.50 mm (0.10 / 0.15 / 0.20 / 0.30 mm standard)
  • Tolerance: ±0.01 mm on outline, ±0.02 mm on locating-hole position, flatness controlled per 100 mm
  • Minimum Feature: 0.15 mm locating hole, 0.03 mm half-etched step, 0.10 mm web
  • Surface Options: PSA adhesive backing, PI lamination, nickel plating, deburr, release liner, tape-and-reel
  • Compliance: ISO 9001 process control, RoHS/REACH material traceability

Manufacturing Process / Workflow (8 Steps)

  1. Artwork & Bend-Zone Review — Convert the stiffener drawing to vector artwork and check the outline against the FPC bending area and component keep-outs.
  2. Material Selection — Choose 304/316L stainless for stiffness, C1100 copper for grounding, or PI/FR-4 laminate for insulation, and confirm gauge and flatness.
  3. Cleaning & Lamination — Degrease and laminate dry-film resist on both faces so fine locating holes and steps develop cleanly.
  4. UV Exposure — Expose both sides through registered film, aligning locating holes and the outline to the assembly datum.
  5. Development — Wash out unexposed resist to open the outline, holes and half-etch windows, then inspect small holes for residue.
  6. Etching — Spray etchant matched to the alloy, controlling time and conveyor speed for straight walls and the target step depth.
  7. Stripping & Bonding Prep — Remove resist, neutralize, deburr, then apply PSA backing, PI lamination or nickel plating as required.
  8. Inspection & Packing — Measure outline, hole position, thickness and flatness against the approved sample, then pack on release liner or in tape-and-reel.

Core Advantages

  1. Burr-free bonding: Chemical cutting leaves no rolled edge or burr, so the stiffener sits flush on the FPC and adhesive bonds without voids.
  2. Low-cost outline changes: A new outline or hole pattern is a new film, so connector variants need no punching die.
  3. Controlled flatness: No mechanical force is applied, so thin plates stay flat and do not curl after the adhesive is cured.
  4. Half-etched steps: Stepped thickness, counterbore-like recesses and connector windows are formed in the same pass as the outline.
  5. Material flexibility: Stainless, copper, Alloy 42 and PI-backed laminate run on one line, so one FPC can mix stiffener materials.
  6. Thickness and bonding in one part: Stiffener etching combines a controlled gauge, a clean outline and an adhesive-ready surface, so the plate drops straight into FPC lamination.

Typical Applications

  • Connector / gold-finger stiffeners: 0.20–0.30 mm stainless or PI plates behind ZIF and board-to-board connectors.
  • Component support plates: Rigid backing under ICs, shields and sockets on flexible circuits.
  • Grounding stiffeners: C1100 copper plates that stiffen and provide an EMI ground plane.
  • Camera & display module FPCs: Thin flat stiffeners with fine locating holes for phone and panel modules.
  • Sensor & antenna stiffeners: PI-backed plates that keep a flexible tail flat without shorting traces.
  • Prototype & small-batch FPCs: Short-run stiffener shapes for assembly validation before hard tooling.

Design Notes & Process Considerations

  1. Gauge versus bend area: Specify thickness against the FPC bending radius; a plate that reaches into the bend zone will crack the traces.
  2. Outline and hole datum: Give locating holes and a single assembly datum so the stiffener registers to the FPC coverlay and pads.
  3. Half-etch step depth: State step depth (commonly 0.03–0.10 mm) and remaining thickness where a recessed or stepped profile is needed.
  4. Flatness and warp: Call out flatness per 100 mm and post-cure warp limits for thin plates with PSA backing.
  5. Adhesive and lamination: Name the PSA grade, PI film and cure temperature; heat and pressure must match the FPC process.
  6. Keep-out and clearance: With stiffener etching, mark component keep-outs, connector windows and edge clearance so the bonded plate never bridges a flexing area.
