Overview
Stainless steel valve plate etching uses photochemical machining to cut thin, resilient valve tongues, slots and port outlines into spring-temper stainless sheet for compressors, pumps and fluid controls, without a stamping die. A photoresist mask is exposed with the valve geometry, developed, and the unprotected metal is dissolved in a controlled ferric chloride spray, so tongue width, slot clearance and profile are set by the artwork and etch time rather than tool pressure. Typical stock is 301, 304, 316L and 7C27Mo2 stainless between 0.05 mm and 0.30 mm, chosen for spring temper, fatigue strength and a flat, burr-free sealing face that seats cleanly against a valve seat.
For compressor and pump buyers, stainless steel valve plate etching solves three recurring problems: stamped valve tongues carry rolled burrs and residual stress that become fatigue crack starters, slot clearances at 0.08 mm and narrow tongues are hard to blank without distortion, and any bow or heat tint breaks the seal line and raises leakage. Chemical machining forms every tongue and slot on a sheet at the same rate, holding profile consistent from the first sample through volume production, while leaving the plate flat, stress-free and free of the work-hardened edge that shortens cycle life under millions of openings.

Manufacturing Process / Workflow (8 Steps)
- Artwork & Nesting — Convert valve tongues and ports to vector art, verify tongue-to-thickness and slot rules, and lay out panels with shared fiducials.
- Material Certification & Prep — Verify grade, mill certificate and temper, check thickness and flatness, then shear to exposure size.
- Cleaning & Lamination — Degrease and laminate dry-film resist on both faces under matched heat and pressure without trapped bubbles.
- Dual-Side UV Exposure — Expose the valve profile from top and bottom in register so both faces etch symmetrically toward clean edges.
- Development — Wash out unexposed resist to open the slot areas and inspect for residue that would blunt a tongue.
- Controlled Etching — Spray stainless-matched ferric chloride, tuning time, temperature and conveyor speed to hold tongue width and avoid undercut.
- Stripping & Stress Relief — Strip resist, neutralize, then apply stress-relief anneal, electropolish and passivate or shot-peen the tongues.
- Inspection & Packaging — Measure outline, tongue width and slot clearance on a vision system, verify flatness, then pack between liners.
Core Advantages
- Burr-free sealing face: Chemical removal leaves no rolled edge, so the valve tongue seats flush and leakage stays low.
- No die cost: Each valve layout is a new film, keeping prototype plates and frequent profile revisions economical without a blanking tool.
- Long fatigue life: With no work-hardened lip or heat-affected zone, the tongues survive millions of cycles without crack starters.
- Stress-free flatness: With no shear or heat input, the plate stays flat, so clamping and seating will not preload or bow the tongues.
- Fine repeatable tongues: 0.12 mm tongues and 0.08 mm slots hold ±0.01 mm, so opening pressure and flow stay consistent part to part.
- Repeatable custom profiles: stainless steel valve plate etching can combine tongues, ports and mounting holes on one plate, reproduced from first article to volume.
Typical Applications
- Refrigeration compressor valves: Suction and discharge valve plates with flat, fatigue-resistant tongues.
- Air compressor reed valves: Thin reed plates that open and close at defined pressure differentials.
- Vacuum & dosing pumps: Fine valve tongues for metering and diaphragm pump fluid control.
- Hydraulic & pneumatic valves: Shim-style plates that seat against a port face under repeated cycling.
- Automotive & fuel pumps: Corrosion-resistant valve plates for fuel and fluid delivery modules.
- Medical micro-valves: Burr-free, cleanable plates for low-flow gas and liquid control devices.
Design Notes & Process Considerations
- Tongue-to-thickness ratio: Keep tongue width at or above roughly the sheet thickness; narrow tongues in thick stock distort from undercut.
- Profile and flatness callout: State tongue width, slot clearance, outline and allowable bow, since these set cracking pressure and sealing.
- Grade and temper: Choose spring-temper 301 or 7C27Mo2 for fatigue life, and note the temper and anneal condition on the drawing.
- Surface and fatigue: Define electropolish, passivation and shot peening, since surface finish strongly affects cycle life on a flexing valve.
- Tie bars and borders: Leave adequate tie bars and process borders, and specify final singulation so thin tongues survive stripping and peening.
- Handling and cleanliness: With stainless steel valve plate etching, specify liner packaging, flatness and residual-ion limits for clean fluid-control assembly.
