Custom Seal Ring Etching for Sealing Parts

Overview

Custom seal ring etching fabricates sealing rings whose groove pattern, inner and outer diameter, bolt holes and locating features are all matched to a customer's drawing, using photochemical machining instead of turning or stamping. A photoresist mask is exposed with the exact groove layout, developed, and the bare metal is dissolved to a controlled depth, so the ring leaves the process flat, burr-free and dimensionally repeatable. Typical materials are stainless steel 304/316L, aluminum 5052, copper and brass, in thicknesses from 0.1 mm to 2.0 mm. Because the artwork drives every feature, changing a groove width, adding a hole or shifting a diameter costs only a new film — there is no die to cut, no fixture to build and no long lead time.

What makes custom seal ring etching valuable is the freedom to design the sealing face around the application rather than around a toolmaker's limits. A designer can specify an eccentric groove, a multi-lobed ring, a stepped land or a ring with integral tabs and slots, and the same film reproduces the geometry identically on every piece. The chemical process keeps the ring flat and stress-free, which matters when the part must clamp evenly against a mating face, and it handles very thin sections that would chatter or tear under a cutting tool.

Parameter Window

  • Available Materials: stainless steel 304/316L, aluminum 5052, copper C1100, brass C2680
  • Material Thickness Range: 0.1–2.0 mm
  • Tolerance: outline and bore ±0.05 mm, groove depth ±0.02 mm, flatness 0.05 mm per 100 mm
  • Minimum Feature: 0.3 mm groove width at 0.5 mm stock
  • Surface Options: passivation, electropolish, anodizing (aluminum), nickel plating
  • Compliance: ISO 9001 process control, RoHS/REACH material traceability

Manufacturing Process / Workflow (8 Steps)

  1. Drawing Review — Convert the customer seal-ring drawing to vector artwork, checking groove width, depth, bore and bolt pattern against stock thickness.
  2. Material Selection — Match alloy, temper and hardness to the fluid, temperature and clamp load the ring will see in service.
  3. Cleaning & Lamination — Degrease the sheet and laminate dry film resist so the groove, land and bore areas are bubble-free.
  4. UV Exposure — Expose through high-resolution film with the groove profile registered to the ring center and hole pattern.
  5. Development — Wash out unexposed resist to open grooves and apertures, then inspect for under-developed or ragged edges.
  6. Etching — Immersion or spray etch to the specified depth, controlling groove width and flat bottom through time, temperature and agitation.
  7. Stripping & Finishing — Remove resist, neutralize, then passivate, electropolish or anodize; level where flatness must be restored.
  8. Inspection & Packaging — Verify groove depth, width, flatness, bore and outline on a CMM, then pack rings flat on liner or in trays.

Core Advantages

  1. Geometry matched to the drawing: Eccentric grooves, lobes, tabs and slots are all reproduced from artwork, not limited by a tool.
  2. Flat and stress-free: The chemical process adds no cutting force, so rings stay flat and clamp evenly onto the sealing face.
  3. No tooling lead time: Every revision is a new film, so prototype rings ship in days and design changes cost almost nothing.
  4. Burr-free sealing surfaces: Grooves and lands leave the bath clean, with no burr to damage an O-ring or hold contamination.
  5. Thin and fragile sections: Etching handles ring walls too thin to turn or stamp without tearing or chattering.
  6. One-line material flexibility: Stainless, aluminum, copper and brass run together, so custom seal ring etching mixes materials within a single order.

Typical Applications

  • Custom flange rings: Sealing rings with an application-specific groove pattern for bespoke flanges and couplings.
  • Sensor port seals: Rings with tabs and notches that locate against a housing and seal the sensing port.
  • Battery cap rings: Thin aluminum or copper rings with etched grooves for cell caps and vent features.
  • Valve seat rings: Sealing rings with concentric or stepped lands for custom valve bodies.
  • Vacuum fittings: Stainless rings with a controlled land for custom vacuum and low-outgassing joints.
  • Heat exchanger plates: Rings that combine a sealing groove with flow apertures for plate-style exchangers.

Design Notes & Process Considerations

  1. Groove width versus depth: Keep groove width at least 2× the etched depth so the floor stays flat and the sidewalls stay clean.
  2. Flatness callout: State flatness per 100 mm, typically 0.05 mm; a bowed ring cannot clamp evenly onto the mating face.
  3. Bore and outline tolerance: Specify bore and outline to ±0.05 mm and note whether the ring is half-etched or through-cut.
  4. Land width: Keep the sealing land wide enough relative to stock so side-etch does not undercut it.
  5. Surface finish: Name passivation or electropolish for stainless, anodizing for aluminum, to protect the sealing face.
  6. Combined features: Add bolt holes, notches and tabs in the same artwork; custom seal ring etching should always state groove depth, flatness and land width on the drawing.
