Custom 304 Stainless Steel Atomizing Screen

Overview

A custom 304 stainless steel atomizing screen is a micro-perforated foil at the heart of humidifiers, medical nebulizers and fine-spray devices. Photochemical etching forms a high-density array of micro-holes in thin 304 stainless foil without mechanical force or a stamping die. The 304 grade resists water mist and mild corrosive media, and the etched holes are round, uniform and burr-free, so droplet size stays consistent. A photoresist mask is exposed with the hole artwork, developed, and the unprotected metal is dissolved in chemistry matched to stainless, so hole diameter, pitch and web width are set by the artwork and etch time rather than by tool pressure.

For device and sourcing engineers, a custom 304 stainless steel atomizing screen solves three recurring problems. Droplet size depends on round, uniform micro-holes, and punching or drilling at 0.05 mm scale distorts thin foil and cannot hold both accuracy and throughput; the screen sits in water mist, drug solutions or essential oils, so any hole burr traps residue, clogs and threatens hygiene and output stability; and a single foil carries thousands of holes, so wide hole-size spread makes mist volume and noise vary unit to unit. Chemical machining forms every hole on a sheet at the same rate, keeping hole size and open area consistent from the first sample through volume production.

Parameter Window

  • Available Materials: 304 / 304L stainless as standard, also 316L, medical 316LVM, and nickel foil for electroformed comparison
  • Material Thickness Range: 0.05–0.30 mm
  • Tolerance: ±0.01 mm on hole diameter, ±0.02 mm on pitch
  • Minimum Feature: 0.05 mm hole diameter, 0.06 mm web/strand, pitch from 0.10 mm
  • Surface Options: electropolishing, passivation, ultrasonic cleaning, anti-clog coating, bright anneal
  • Compliance: ISO 9001 process control, RoHS/REACH material traceability

Manufacturing Process / Workflow (8 Steps)

  1. Artwork & Nesting — Convert the micro-hole array to vector art, check hole-to-thickness ratio, and plan layout, pitch and registration marks.
  2. Material Certification & Prep — Verify 304 grade, mill certificate and foil thickness, check scratches, flatness and cleanliness, then shear to exposure size.
  3. Cleaning & Lamination — Degrease both sides and laminate dry film resist under matched heat and pressure so no bubbles sit over the hole areas.
  4. UV Exposure — Expose both sides through high-resolution film, registering the array to the foil edge for face-to-face alignment.
  5. Development — Wash out unexposed resist to open the holes, and inspect for residue that would cause blind or blocked holes.
  6. Controlled Etching — Spray stainless-matched chemistry on both sides, tuning time, temperature and line speed to hold wall taper and avoid hole merging.
  7. Stripping & Polishing — Remove resist and neutralize, then electropolish and passivate to clear hole-mouth burrs and free iron.
  8. Inspection & Packaging — Measure hole size, pitch and open area on a vision system, run flow and mist tests, then pack in clean trays or on liner.

Core Advantages

  1. Uniform mist: Round holes with tight spread produce a narrow droplet-size distribution and stable output under ultrasonic or pressure drive.
  2. Bur-free holes: Chemical removal leaves no rolled edge or dross, so hole walls resist fouling and output decays little over time.
  3. No die cost: Each new hole pattern is a new film, keeping prototypes and frequent pitch revisions economical without a stamping tool.
  4. Flat thin foil: With no shear or heat input, 0.05 mm foil stays flat and stress-free, so it will not warp on the transducer or nozzle.
  5. Corrosion-resistant and cleanable: 304 stainless resists water mist and mild media, and electropolishing plus passivation supports repeated hygienic cleaning.
  6. Volume repeatability: Every hole etches together, so hole size and open area hold from first article to production, with vision reports for traceability.

Typical Applications

  • Home humidifiers: Ultrasonic atomizing foils and outlet meshes where uniform micro-holes set mist fineness and quiet operation.
  • Medical nebulizers: Drug-solution mesh plates whose consistent holes keep aerosol droplets in the respirable range.
  • Aroma and beauty devices: Essential-oil and hydrating meshes that resist oil attack and residue build-up at the hole mouth.
  • Industrial spray nozzles: Micro-hole screens for humidification, cooling and coating that balance flow rate and spray shape.
  • Fuel and combustion atomization: Premix screens for burners where a stable hole array improves atomization and combustion.
  • Analytical sample introduction: Combined atomizing and filtering meshes where clean edges avoid sample carryover.

Design Notes & Process Considerations

  1. Hole-to-thickness ratio: Keep hole diameter at or above material thickness; on thin foil approach 1:1, or undercut distorts shape and steepens wall taper.
  2. Open-area callout: Specify hole diameter, pitch, array type and open-area percentage, and define round or hexagonal arrays rather than only a mesh count.
  3. Wall taper: For directional mist, state which face is etched and the required wall taper, plus hole-mouth finish after electropolishing.
  4. Nesting and tie bars: Leave enough tie bars and process borders, and define the final cut method so thin webs survive stripping and cleaning.
  5. Cleanliness and anti-clog: For medical and food-contact parts, set cleaning class, residual-ion limits and anti-clog coating to avoid fouling and microbial residue.
  6. Documentation: With a custom 304 stainless steel atomizing screen, attach hole-size tolerance, pitch datums and a flow-test method to the drawing for repeatable first-article approval.
