Atomizing Screen Etching for Fine Screens

Overview

Atomizing screen etching uses photochemical machining to produce the fine screens that turn a liquid into a mist or aerosol. The screen is a thin disc or sheet in which a dense array of micro holes is etched through, so the liquid forced through the holes breaks into uniform droplets. Because the holes are formed chemically from both sides rather than punched or laser-drilled, every aperture has a clean edge and a consistent diameter, which is what keeps the droplet size and spray pattern uniform.

The controlling requirement is micro-hole consistency. If hole size or shape varies across the screen, the atomized droplets vary with it, and the mist becomes uneven. Atomizing screen etching runs stainless steel and nickel from 0.03 mm to 0.3 mm thick, with hole diameters from about 0.01 mm upward and hole patterns set by artwork. It is used in ultrasonic and pressure atomizers, fragrance and medical nebulizers, humidifiers, fuel atomizers and electronic cigarette mesh, where the screen must be thin, flat and chemically inert.

Parameter Window

  • Available Materials: stainless steel 304/316L, nickel, nickel alloys
  • Material Thickness Range: 0.03–0.3 mm
  • Tolerance: hole diameter ±0.01 mm, pitch ±0.03 mm across the screen
  • Minimum Feature: hole diameter down to 0.01 mm
  • Surface Options: as-etched, electropolished, passivated, plated
  • Compliance: ISO 9001 process control, RoHS/REACH material traceability

Manufacturing Process / Workflow (8 Steps)

  1. Atomization Requirement Review — Convert the target droplet size and flow into a hole diameter, pitch and open-area specification.
  2. Pattern Design — Lay out the micro-hole array with uniform pitch, adding a solid border for mounting and sealing.
  3. Material Selection — Choose stainless or nickel for corrosion resistance and chemical inertness with the atomized fluid.
  4. Cleaning & Lamination — Degrease the foil and laminate dry film resist on both sides for double-side etching.
  5. Double-Side Exposure — Expose the hole array with front-to-back registration so every hole is straight and centered.
  6. Etching — Etch with matched chemistry, controlling time and temperature to reach hole diameter with limited undercut.
  7. Stripping & Finishing — Strip resist, neutralize, then electropolish or passivate to smooth edges and stabilize the surface.
  8. Inspection & Packaging — Measure hole diameter, pitch and open area optically, check flatness, then pack flat and protected.

Core Advantages

  1. Uniform micro holes: Every hole etches at the same rate, so droplet size and mist density stay consistent across the screen.
  2. Clean hole edges: Double-side etching leaves smooth apertures that release liquid evenly and resist clogging.
  3. Fine hole capability: Hole diameters down to 0.01 mm produce the fine mist that punching and drilling cannot hold.
  4. Flat and thin screens: Chemical removal keeps the screen flat and stress-free for stable ultrasonic or pressure operation.
  5. No tooling: Hole size, pitch and pattern change with the artwork, so new atomizer designs need no new die.
  6. Chemically inert alloys: Stainless and nickel resist the fragrance, drug and solvent fluids they atomize.

Typical Applications

  • Ultrasonic atomizers: Thin flat screens that vibrate to produce fine mist.
  • Medical nebulizers: Precise micro-hole screens for drug delivery aerosols.
  • Fragrance and aroma diffusers: Uniform screens for consistent scent dispersion.
  • Humidifiers: Fine-hole screens for even moisture output.
  • Fuel atomizers: Durable stainless screens for combustion fuel spray.
  • Electronic cigarette mesh: Inert micro-mesh for vaporization heating elements.

Design Notes & Process Considerations

  1. Hole size versus thickness: Keep hole diameter near 1× thickness or greater so the hole stays straight and unclogged.
  2. Pitch and open area: State the target open area as a percentage; it sets the mist density and flow rate.
  3. Material choice: Specify stainless for strength, nickel for chemical inertness, matched to the atomized fluid.
  4. Edge finish: Call out electropolish for the smoothest edges, which improve release and reduce residue buildup.
  5. Flatness: For ultrasonic screens, specify flatness so the screen vibrates uniformly across its active area.
  6. Border land: Add a solid perimeter for mounting and sealing so the screen seats evenly in the atomizer.
