Photo etched model parts, commonly shortened to PE parts or PE fret among model hobbyists, are ultra-thin metal detailing components produced by photochemical etching. They serve as premium upgrade accessories for scale models, resolving the limitation of thick, low-fidelity plastic molded details and bringing authentic thin-metal texture and microscopic realism to static display models. Brass remains the dominant material for photo etched model parts; stainless steel, nickel silver and phosphor bronze are also selected for special requirements. Standard material thickness covers 0.05 mm, 0.1 mm, 0.15 mm, 0.2 mm and 0.3 mm, compatible with mainstream scales such as 1/35, 1/48, 1/72, 1/144, 1/200 and 1/350.

The production workflow of photo etched model parts starts with custom layout and DFM optimization for model use. Designers arrange dozens to hundreds of individual details on one single metal fret, including railings, ladders, grating mesh, instrument panels, seat belts, antenna brackets, exhaust grilles, hatch hinges, rivet lines, nameplates and tool brackets. Half-etched fold lines are embedded at bending positions, only partially cutting into the sheet thickness instead of cutting through, which allows modellers to fold the flat metal blank neatly without cracking. After artwork confirmation, the thin metal substrate is fully degreased and cleaned. Photoresist is coated or dry-film laminated on both sides, followed by UV exposure to transfer the graphic pattern. The developing stage removes unprotected photoresist and exposes the metal zones scheduled for removal.

Controlled dual-sided spray etching dissolves the exposed metal evenly. The protected regions stay intact and form the final PE details. Etching speed and etchant concentration are strictly stabilized to guarantee consistent line width, smooth edges and clean mesh apertures. Once etching is finished, residual photoresist is stripped off. Parts go through rinsing, drying and surface finishing. Available surface treatments include anti-tarnish passivation, matte finish, gold plating and nickel plating. Every fret is visually inspected before packing to eliminate broken fine features such as thin railings and tiny mesh strips.

Compared with original plastic kit parts, resin cast details and laser cut metal pieces, photo etched model parts carry unique strengths for scale modeling. First, burr-free and stress-free fine edges: chemical subtractive processing avoids laser slag and mechanical shear burrs, so no heavy sanding is needed after separation. Second, ultra-fine feature capability: micro thin lines and dense mesh that injection molding cannot produce can be realized easily. Third, integrated half-etch creases: pre-scored fold lines greatly reduce the difficulty of bending and shaping for hobbyists. Fourth, flexible custom development: new detailing sets only require revised digital artwork, with no expensive hard molds, ideal for small-run limited-edition upgrade kits. Fifth, excellent workability: brass PE parts can be bent, soldered, glued, painted, weathered and polished to create realistic aged metal effects.

Photo etched model parts cover nearly all major scale model categories. Warship models heavily rely on PE railings, deck gratings, porthole frames and anchor fittings to upgrade flat plastic decks. Aircraft models use etched cockpit panels, safety belts, air intake grilles, antenna arrays and fuselage rivet details. Military tank and armored vehicle models adopt PE skirts, grille armor, tool mounts, hatch hinges and bolt textures. They are also widely used for classic car models, railway train models, architectural diorama scenes and museum replica exhibits.

Several core design rules apply when ordering custom photo etched model parts. Confirm alloy grade and material temper: soft brass is preferred for most hobby PE sets for easy bending. Thickness should be matched to scale; thinner foil is used for 1/700 and 1/350 micro-scale ship details. Minimum line width and mesh bar width must fit the etching process window. Half-etch depth needs to be balanced: deep enough for easy folding while avoiding accidental breakage during handling. Tab connection points are reasonably arranged so builders can snip off parts conveniently without damaging delicate features. Surface anti-tarnish treatment is strongly recommended for brass PE to slow down oxidation. Our service supports single-sided and double-sided etching, individual custom design for model designers, studio small batches and mass production for model kit brands.

As scale modeling hobby and commercial model manufacturing keep pursuing higher realism, photo etched model parts have become an indispensable detailing solution. Whether you are an individual modeller chasing top-tier finish, a model studio launching exclusive upgrade sets, or a model manufacturer expanding accessory lines, photochemical etching delivers delicate, repeatable metal details to lift the visual quality of scale models to a new level.
