Photo etched parts, also known as photochemical machined parts, are precision thin-metal components fabricated through photochemical etching, a subtractive manufacturing technology that selectively removes unwanted metal using photosensitive masking and controlled chemical etchant. Widely adopted across high-tech and industrial sectors, photo etched parts stand out for intricate geometry, clean edge quality, stable material performance and flexible customization, making them the preferred solution for ultra-thin metal structures that stamping, laser cutting or CNC machining struggle to produce economically.

A broad range of engineering metals are suitable for photo etched parts, including stainless steel, copper, phosphor bronze, beryllium copper, brass, nickel, kovar, nickel silver, titanium and many alloy materials. Typical material thickness ranges from 0.02 mm up to 1.5 mm. The process retains the base metal’s original electrical, thermal, spring and magnetic properties, with no hardening, residual stress or heat-affected zone generated during production, which is critical for functional components such as EMI shielding springs, electrical contacts and precision shims.

The standard production workflow for photo etched parts begins with DFM review and digital artwork design. Engineers convert customer CAD drawings into etching layout files, arranging multiple parts on a single metal panel, designing tab connections for panel support, defining half-etch lines for folding and avoiding fragile narrow features that may break during processing. After layout confirmation, the metal sheet undergoes full degreasing and oxide removal to guarantee consistent photoresist adhesion. Dry film or liquid photoresist is laminated or coated onto one or both sides of the substrate. UV exposure transfers the designed pattern onto the photoresist layer, and the developing step washes away unexposed resist to expose the metal regions scheduled for removal.

Automated dual-sided spray etching follows, where etchant solution uniformly dissolves the unprotected metal. Regions covered by cured photoresist remain intact and form the outline, slots, holes and fine patterns of the finished photo etched parts. Half-etching is a signature capability of this process: etching only partway through the sheet thickness to create pre-scored fold lines, enabling flat blanks to be bent into 3D structures such as shielding cans, spring clips and assembled frames. Once dimensional inspection confirms tolerance compliance, the remaining photoresist is stripped away. Parts are then rinsed, dried and sent for post-treatment, including passivation, tin plating, nickel plating, gold plating, matte finishing and anti-tarnish coating before final QC and packing.

Compared with traditional metal fabrication methods, photo etched parts carry distinct competitive advantages. First, completely burr-free and stress-free edges: there is no mechanical shearing, impact or laser thermal damage, so secondary deburring or stress-relief annealing is not required. Second, complexity adds little extra cost: fine slots, mesh, aperture arrays and nested intricate features can be integrated into one design without incremental charges. Third, rapid design iteration and low startup cost: modifications only require updating digital artwork, eliminating expensive hard stamping dies, greatly cutting sampling cost and lead time. Fourth, excellent repeatability and tight tolerance control: consistent feature dimensions across the whole panel and batch, suitable for both prototype validation and mass production. Fifth, integrated multi-function design: grounding tabs, positioning holes, spring fingers and fold lines can be formed in a single process step.

Photo etched parts serve diverse high-demand industries and product categories. In electronics and RF communication, they include EMI shielding cans, contact springs, lead frames and conductive gaskets. Semiconductor manufacturing relies on etched shadow masks, test socket components, filter meshes and bipolar plates. Aerospace and defense applications cover precision shims, aperture plates, encoder discs and lightweight structural details. Medical device manufacturers use biocompatible etched components such as surgical filter meshes, sensor diaphragms and micro spring contacts. Scale model and hobby markets widely use brass photo etched detail fret for ship, aircraft and military model upgrades. Additional fields include automotive electronics, optical instruments, energy fuel cells and industrial sensing systems.

Several core design rules should be followed when ordering custom photo etched parts. Minimum feature width and hole diameter are generally limited by substrate thickness; thinner stock supports finer micro patterns. The etch factor and sidewall undercut must be accounted for during drawing design to meet final dimensional requirements. Half-etch depth should be specified clearly according to bending stiffness needs. Material selection must match operating requirements: copper for high conductivity, beryllium copper for repeated spring cycles, stainless steel for corrosion resistance and structural rigidity, kovar for matched thermal expansion in hermetic packaging. Surface plating options are selected based on solderability, contact resistance and environmental durability. Our service supports single-sided and double-sided etching, reel-to-reel continuous processing for high-volume thin parts, as well as panelized small batch custom jobs.

As modern engineering continues miniaturization and raises requirements for fine metal features, photo etched parts deliver a reliable, scalable manufacturing path for thin complex metal components. Whether you need one-off prototypes, pilot batch validation or millions of mass-produced components, photochemical etching balances precision, lead time and cost, helping engineers realize sophisticated metal designs that other manufacturing technologies cannot achieve efficiently.
