Photo-Etched Model Parts | Precision Photochemical Etching for Scale Model Components
Release Date:2026-10-06

Photo-etched model parts, commonly shortened as PE parts, are thin metal detail components manufactured by photochemical etching technology, highly popular among scale model builders, hobbyists and model manufacturers. Typical raw materials include stainless steel, brass, copper and nickel silver, with sheet thickness ranging from 0.02mm to 0.3mm.
Manufacturing Process
- Metal sheet cleaning and surface preparation to remove oil and oxidation.
- Apply photoresist film and laminate onto the metal substrate.
- Expose with custom model artwork film under UV light.
- Develop to remove unexposed photoresist, revealing the pattern.
- Chemical etching to dissolve exposed metal and form fine contours, mesh, rivets, ladders, handrails and decal frames.
- Strip remaining photoresist, deburr, clean and finish for final PE model kits.
Core Advantages
- Ultra-fine micro features: Produce tiny rivet lines, fine mesh, delicate handrails that cannot be achieved by plastic injection molding.
- Burr-free & stress-free parts, no deformation after cutting out from the carrier frame.
- High dimensional consistency for mass production of model accessory sets.
- Flexible design: Rapid prototype without expensive hard tooling; modify patterns quickly for custom model projects.
- Thin metal texture, realistic metal appearance for military, aircraft, ship and car scale models.
Application Fields
- Military scale models: tanks, warships, fighter jets, military vehicle detail upgrades
- Railway and architectural scale models
- Automotive and motorcycle model decoration parts
- RC hobby model fine metal accessories
- Custom collector limited-edition model detail sets
Design Notes
- Minimum feature width and gaps depend on metal sheet thickness; rule of thumb: feature width ≥ material thickness.
- Small fragile details need connection tabs to keep parts on the carrier frame.
- Thinner materials require careful handling to avoid bending during assembly by model hobbyists.
- Secondary surface finishes such as plating or passivation can be added for anti-tarnish performance for brass PE parts.
