SMT Stencils / Metal Stencils | Precision Photochemical & Electroformed Metal Stencils
Release Date:2026-09-24

SMT metal stencils are thin metal templates used to deposit precise volumes of solder paste onto PCB pads during surface mount technology assembly. Two primary manufacturing methods are photochemical etching and electroforming. Etched and electroformed metal stencils offer exceptional consistency for fine-pitch, microchip, BGA and advanced packaging applications.
How SMT Metal Stencils Are Made
1. Photochemical Etched SMT Stencils
- Material Preparation: Clean thin stainless steel sheet, remove grease and surface contaminants.
- Photoresist Lamination: Apply dry film photoresist on both sides of steel foil.
- UV Exposure: Align Gerber phototool and expose the stencil blank under UV light.
- Development: Wash away unexposed resist to reveal aperture areas.
- Chemical Etching: Etch from both sides to form tapered openings for clean solder paste release.
- Stripping & Cleaning: Remove residual photoresist and thoroughly clean the stencil.
- Inspection & Framing: Aperture dimensional verification, laser inspection, mount onto stencil frame.
2. Electroformed SMT Stencils
- Master Tool Fabrication: Create patterned conductive substrate as a forming mold.
- Nickel Electroplating: Deposit nickel onto the master mold to build up controlled metal thickness.
- Separation: Peel the electroformed nickel stencil from the master.
- Aperture Polishing: Smooth internal aperture walls for superior paste release.
- Metrology & Framing: Full aperture inspection and frame assembly.
Core Advantages
- Ultra-precise aperture geometry: Consistent hole size and wall finish for stable solder paste transfer.
- Tapered aperture design (etched stencil): Optimized sidewall angle reduces paste sticking and bridging defects.
- Ultra-fine pitch capability: Electroformed stencils excel for micro BGA, CSP, FCBGA and ultra-small components.
- Burr-free aperture walls: No micro burrs to block solder paste flow.
- Custom thickness & framing options: Match PCB and component requirements, available with or without mesh frames.
- Fast prototyping: Digital Gerber input, no hard metal tooling required for design changes.
Typical Application Fields
- PCB SMT assembly for consumer electronics, automotive electronics
- BGA, CSP, QFN, 01005 and 008004 ultra-miniature component printing
- Semiconductor packaging: FCBGA, SiP, flip chip ball placement stencils
- Medical device electronics and industrial control circuit boards
- Custom metal stencils for adhesive dispensing, conductive paste coating
Design Considerations for SMT Metal Stencils
- Aperture size, aspect ratio and area ratio are critical to avoid insufficient paste or bridging.
- Material options: 304 / 316 stainless steel for etched stencils; pure nickel for electroformed stencils.
- Stencil thickness must be selected according to component pitch and pad size.
- Surface coating options: nano-coating to improve solder paste release and reduce cleaning frequency.
- Gerber file requirements: confirm layer, tolerance and fiducial marks before production.
