Complete Production Workflow for Electroformed Parts

Step 1: DFM Analysis & Custom Mandrel Fabrication

Each electroforming project commences with drawing review. Our engineering team evaluates customer CAD files, confirms dimensional tolerances, minimum feature size, wall thickness, material selection and operatingenvironment requirements. According to part geometry, we produce highprecision mandrels, either reusable rigid molds or disposable sacrificial molds. The mandrel carries inverse patterns of final electroformed parts. Nonconductive mandrels will receive conductive seedlayer coating to enable subsequent electrodeposition. Mandrel precision directly decides final feature accuracy and surface quality of electroformed parts.

Step 2: Mandrel Surface PreTreatment

Multistage cleaning removes grease, dust and oxide residues from patterned mandrels. For reusable mandrels, uniform release agent is applied to realize smooth demolding without scratching finished electroformed surfaces. Even tiny contamination will cause pinholes, pitting spots or poor metal adhesion on electroformed parts. Strict pretreatment is essential for stable production yield.

Step 3: Electrolyte Formulation & Bath Calibration

Target electrolyte solution is prepared corresponding to selected metal or alloy. Nickelsulfamate electrolyte is widely used for industrial nickelbased electroformed parts. Alloy additives will be added for nickelcobalt alloy products. Production lines perform closedloop realtime monitoring of bath composition, temperature, PH value and circulation status. Stable electrolyte conditions restrain internal stress, brittleness and uneven grain growth.

Step 4: Controlled Electrodeposition (Core Electroforming Stage)

Preprocessed mandrel is mounted as cathode and immersed into electroforming tank, matched with corresponding metal anodes. Adjustable directcurrent power supply drives metal ions to migrate and deposit layerbylayer on mandrel surface. Current density, bath temperature, solution agitation and deposition duration are precisely controlled according to target thickness. Deposition hours vary from several hours to more than twenty hours. Metal grows uniformly inside microholes, narrow grooves and thinwall zones, forming integral seamless metal structures.

Step 5: Demolding & Thorough Rinsing

When designed thickness is achieved, semifinished electroformed parts are lifted out and fully rinsed to wash residual electrolyte away. Demolding mode depends on mandrel type: mechanical peeling for reusable rigid mandrels; chemical dissolving for sacrificial mandrels. Gentle separation operations avoid deformation, creases and microcracks on delicate thin electroformed components.

Step 6: PostTreatment & Surface Finishing

Postprocessing options include stressrelief heat treatment, outer contour trimming, deburring, passivation anticorrosion treatment, cleaning and drying. Additional surface treatments such as antitarnish coating or functional plating can be implemented for special application requirements.

Step 7: MultiDimensional Quality Inspection

Finished electroformed parts go through comprehensive quality checks. 2D vision measuring system verifies overall dimensions and feature tolerances. Metallurgical microscope inspects microaperture consistency, pinholes, scratches and pattern defects. For highreliability projects, hardness testing, saltspray corrosion test and openarea ratio measurement can be performed.
